If you are new parent, and don’t have anybody around help you, you might not be aware that you need to burp your baby often when feeding it. When babies are nursing or sucking a bottle, they have a tendency to swallow a lot of air which causes them to become overfull and makes them vomit a lot. You can help prevent a little bit of this by burping them regularly while feeding.
I am going to lay out a few ways that you can burp your baby safely and effectively.
1. The first way and most common that people use is to place the baby over the shoulder and gently rub or pat their back. This is effective though make sure to put a little blankie on your shoulder or you are likely to get a neck and shoulder full of baby vomit.
2. The next way, and the way that I prefer, is to place the baby on your knee and support their chest and neck with one hand while gently rubbing and patting their lower back. Sometimes it helps to gently rock the baby back and forth. This way allows me to see the vomit coming and I don’t get it on me near as often.
3. The third effective method is to lay the baby across your knee and gently rock the baby back and forth while gently patting their back.
Like I said earlier it is important that you place a blankie underneath the baby in all instances so you can catch any potential spit up that ensues the burp. You will find that if you baby gets fussy while eating, is a big cause of it is because they simply need to be burped.
